We took our first real holiday for 2009 in Amsterdam. We decided to take the trip because of two major factors. One, we were no longer shoving off to the UK this year (see postponed). Therefore, as compensation for the year wasted, we decided that a trip in December was well deserved. Second, the job was already sending me there on business, so why not extend the visit for a few nights to vacation? So the decision was a made and off we went.
Amsterdam was wonderful. The people were very hospitable, the food varied and delicious, and the surroundings were both antiquated and modern. Our original plans included a day trip out to Belgium, but after the first day we decided to scratch the trip and focus all five days in Amsterdam. We wanted to experience the entire city without feeling rushed and it was the best decision we could have made.
And as a side note, you can most certainly experience the major points of Amsterdam in a harried day to two with no problems. But if you have the time and inclination, you won’t be disappointed to spend it all in this beautiful city.
The most enjoyable aspect of this city (and believe me there are many) had to be the cyclists. Bicycles everywhere. And I mean everywhere. There is a three story parking garage solely for the use of bikes near Central Station. Old and young alike ride through the city and there’s just something about hopping on a bike and just riding that appeals to the five year old kid inside.
All in all, it was a wonderful time. We’re already planning to return in a couple of years to experience the city again in the Spring or Summer.
